Blog Entry :: I Get Schooled, He Just Goes There

School is in full-swing for us.  We're midway through week 3 of kindergarten and things are starting to fall into place.  That is to say that everything is still a chaotic battle, but we're making progress.  Maybe we're just getting used to it.

I spent a lifetime loathing the alarm clock, swearing that one day I would wake up by my own volition.  I looked forward to it for years of elementary school, jr. high and high school.  It was compounded in college by my nights growing ever later and polluted with women and drink- you know, fun stuff.

Then one day it was over.  College was behind me!

Work was in front of me.  It started even earlier than school did, and I had to wear slacks.  Things did not look promising.

By the time I started post-grad work I had become wise to the system and enrolled in evening classes.  This is what they call playing to your strengths.

Of course, there was a kid already, and then there was another.  Each went through their "early to rise" phase, so even if I were able to sleep past 6a.m. I couldn't sleep past 6a.m.

A little over a year ago I started working at home.  The kids started sleeping a little later.  We were sleeping until 7:30, sometimes eight in the morning.  It took over 30 years, but my dream was becoming a reality.

Then my oldest started school.  He has to be there early.  He has to wake up earlier than early to get dressed and eat his breakfast.  He has to lolly-gag.  We have to walk to school.

My dream of sleeping past 6a.m. is unrealistic and futile.

My son runs into his classroom with a smile for the day ahead.  I walk home with a smile, it's of a man that has accepted his fate and could really use a strong cup of coffee.

A manual should be issued to people expecting children at some point that explains that once the baby is born you essentially Never Sleep Late Again. Unless you're willing to be in a coma.

Don't despair - it gets easier! My kids now get up, get dressed and get their own breakfast while me and their dad get in the last few zzzs. Then, after we drop them off at school (no more having to walk them through the gate even) we come home and pass out for a few more blissful minutes... You may have to continue to wear slacks for awhile, though.
