Blog Entry :: Matthew's First Wiggly Tooth

Well the other night we found out that our little Matthew has his first wiggly tooth.  When my older kids had wiggly teeth they were so excited knowing the tooth fairy would come soon.  Not Matthew.  Matthew hates the sight of blood and has seen first hand some of his schoolmates with bloody wiggly teeth.

My husband, of course, has been no help.  He tells Matthew that he will pull the tooth out and the tooth fairy will come sooner.  Matthew runs to me crying "Mommy, Mommy, tell Daddy not to touch my tooth".  He doesn't want it to fall out.  I try to explain to my 5 yo that it will fall out on it's own anyway because he is growing up and he will be getting grown up teeth soon.  Big mistake on my part.  Matthew always tells me he doesn't want to grow up.  He wants to be my little boy forever.  LOL

So... I try a new approach.  I tell him that the tooth fairy will bring him money when he loses his tooth and we can go to the dollar store and maybe he can get a small toy.  This intrigues him.  "Well, how much money does the tooth fairy give me ?" he asks.  I tell him for a first tooth usually about a dollar.  "WOW, that's alot" he says.  "Can I have an apple now mommy?" he asks.  "Sure" I say.

As he is munching away on the apple he says, "I think it's working".   "What's working?" I ask.  "The apple", he says, "I want my tooth to fall out".  Even kids know the value of a buck.

Now we are just waiting.  Everyday his tooth gets more wiggly.  I think I will cry when my youngest loses his first tooth.  I have all the teeth my older two lost.  Some may think that gross but I feel it is a part of their growing up that I keep in a little container.  Kids grow much too fast!

I think my grandpa actually slammed the door with my tooth attached to it once. What's up with grandpas?

I was like Matthew. My grandfather always joked about tying my tooth to the doorknob. Scared the hell out of me. My tooth would be hanging by a thread, but until it fell out on its own, I didn't want to let it go.

my daughter was terrified it was going to hurt when she lost her first one so my husband being the sweet step-dad that he is babied her. He took a cup of salt water and put beside her and then he took ice cubes and rubbed them on her gums until it numbed them. Then he would wiggle it for a while until it started to bleed and then he would have her hold the salt water in her mouth so she did not see the blood. He was so sweet she did not even cry. after one visit from the tooth fairy she was yanking them out on her own. She wanted the money!!! lol The last tooth she lost her brother decided to help her get it out by putting his blanket in her mouth and having her bite down on it and then he yanked the blanket and pulled it out. That girl is brave and wants money really bad. lol

Even kids know the value of a buck! That's funny! The real trick now is to show him the value of "saving" that buck!
